Serial numbers on older cars don't provide many details like the newer VIN's do. All yours tells us is that the car is a 1956 Golden Hawk built in the South Bend factory. It would be interesting to find out when/why the Packard V8 engine was replaced with a Stude 289. I did learn this car was black with red vinyl interior originally.
I urge you to join the 56 Golden Hawk Owners Registry for more information:

In the 56J world, serial numbers alone are often all that's needed for those in the know. Detailed info (production orders)is also available in CD format, for all 56Js.

The 56J serial numbers also provide info on running changes, for example: "STUDEBAKER" script sometime after 6031800. Gold trunk script sometime after 6033000. Painted front & rear windshield garnishing sometime after 6033000. More details are available in the 56J Restoration Guide

I second the suggestion on joining the 56J Registry. The above CD, Resto Guide, and much more is available through membership there. NO 56J owner should be without membership in the Registry, it will enhance your 56J experience, to put it mildly :)

Good for you. Nice find and I hope you keep another one back on the road.

Ain't no shame in that Stude 289. Eventually, if after driving and enjoying it a few years and miles you decide to go back to a 352, that's always do-able then. For now, get'er on the road and enjoy :)
