I have a 1957 Silver Hawk with a 289 engine and automatic transmission. When I am sitting at a red light it idles right at 600 RPM. However, if I kick it into neutral the RPMs jump up to about 900. My new car will hold the same rpm in or out of gear. Is this an indication that something is not right about the Studebaker or is this normal for an old car. It idles smooth and does not burn oil (it does drip a lot of oil). Thanks

Everything is fine.
The torque converter pulls the engine RPM down.
The idle spec says 'in drive' for that reason.
