  • Transmission / Overdrive: 3 speed overdrive

Is the 3 speed w/overdrive in the studebaker v8 the same as what was used in the late 50's fords? My brother had a 58 ford 2 dr with a 292 and 3 speed overdrive with I think 4.11 or 4.10's. You could run second and overdrive and it would top out around 95-110. Just wondering if the stude trans makes this big of a drop when in OD.

Essentially, yes. Ford used the same Borg-Warner T85 and T86 overdrive transmissions as did Studebaker. The ratios are pretty much the same. The Studebaker speedometers were also optimistic by pretty much the same percentage as were the Fords.

The overdrives in our cars are around 33% over third gear.
