  • 1955 trunk mat question

What type of trunk mat was original for 1955? Any original mat for my 55 President sedan was long gone by the time I purchased it. I'm trying to keep it original where practical.
    American iron, real old school
With two tone paint, it sure is cool

Its got 8 cylinders and uses them all
With an overdrive that just won't stall

With a 4 barrel carb and dual exhausts
With 4.23 gears it can really get lost

Its got safety belts and I ain't scared
The brakes are good and the tires are fair.

Tried to sell her, but got no taker
I"ll just keep driving my Studebaker

Think it should look something like this:

It is a woven almost Wicker Type material that had a Mfg. Proprietary name, that does not come to mind now.
There are expensive reproductions out there, way more accurate than the cotton backed Vinyl "Replacement" type that are readily available.

This is a restored Speedster that has a reproduction type mat - way too clean for original

Hey 62Champ, that's my sister's old 55 speedster and I took that picture a couple years ago. That trunk mat is a repro.

Patrick, what determines the type of trunk mat ? are the upper class cars the material mats as shown? My all original 55 Champion sedan has a small flat rubber mat, that just takes in the flat portion of the trunk floor.

Probably - my Uncle had an all original '53 LandCruiser with that weave material in very good shape - makes since the cheaper cars would not have the larger full fitting stuff.

The picture that 62 Champ posted is exactly like what is in my original '54 hardtop. It is a woven tape of material. The name Burtex sounds familiar.

My '53 Starliner is a Commander, and its mat, which is original, is also the woven type. But the Bridges book on the '53s and '54s says that all types of coupes for '53 had this mat material (called "Mattex").

I believe that the correct woven material trunk mat reproductions that are available are only made for C/K models, not for a sedan, that would be different, as the OP has.
Of course, since the material is available, the correct mat could be made up.
