me and my son were cleaning up in our studebaker garage
    and he found this...

    [img][/img]

...and I told him it was a part of a stud. rim, and he ask me what happend...

I had only driven a few years after I restored my golden hawk,
I had plans for a car meeting that weekend,on friday I had to leave my car in a garage
    for a small repair.

Dan the garage owner should pic up my GH outside my work this morning,
after a few miles of driving my speed was about 60 mph. suddenly the wheels
start shaking, I reduce the speed and it was normal again,
I tried again and now it start shaking in 50 mph. I drove without a problem at a low
    speed to my work.

Dan was waiting, and I told him about the problem I had, and I said to him:
you have to drive carefully Dan: and he replied: it`s okay Jan:
and he drove away at high speed [:0]

A few hours later I got a call from an employee at the garage and he said: we have problem
with your GH, big problem: I said were is Dan? he is in his house and having a whisky,
is it a joke, I said, no the brakedown wehicle has been here with your car [xx(]

When I arrived upset to the garage I saw a 3 wheels golden hawk outside,[V]
and later I spoke with Dan and he told me what happend, he only drove a few miles
when the car start shaking and the right front wheel flew off,
the car sliding about 100 meters on 3 wheels before stopping, he never told me how fast
he drove, you can see on the photo what was sitting on the cracked front drums.

A few days later I towed home the car and put it in garage and locked the door..

After a year I got new power to repair my golden hawk

Considering the seriousness of the situation it does allow for a little humor to lighten the situation. Gives meaning to the phrase "He literally drove the wheels off of that car" .

Its good to see that was as far as the situation with the Golden Hawk went though .

I remember a thread a few months ago in which some folks were pooh-poohing the idea that putting radial tires on Stude rims could put you at risk of a failure like that. I remember posting my experience with a cracked rim on my '63 Wagonaire, which cracked in a pattern almost identical to this one, except that I heard a noise and caught it before it failed 100%.

Listen up, folks! If you have radial tires, ESPECIALLY 205-15 and larger, on stock Stude rims, please go out and carefully check EACH wheel for signs of cracks in this area. Also look for cracks radiating out from the lug holes. Incipient cracks may be seen as nothing more than a line of powdery rust along the trace of a hairline crack in the paint. If any wheel shows signs of cracking, replace them all with new ones.

Even if a lost wheel doesn't put you in hospital or worse, the cost of damage to the car will far exceed the cost of 4 new steel rims; and full wheel discs will hide the fact that Brand X wheels have been installed.

Same thing happened to me on my 47 M-5, problem was I was using after market rims, center hole was not quite as big as orginals, rim did not mesh completly with brake drum. Wheel was riding on the lug bolts which created stress on the center of the rim after I tightened the lug nuts down. A week later coming down a hill, bang center breaks out,WILD RIDE till I came to a stop. It`s the little things that make life fun.
