  • What is size of R3 intake valves?

The spec sheet for my 289 V8 built by T-Bow says it has R3 valves. They measure 1.875 inches. I'm replacing one valve so I ordered R3 intake valves from Studebaker International. They just arrived, and the valves are smaller than 1.875. They appear to be 1.72 (I don't have a micrometer with me, but they are clearly less than 1.75 inches). I called Studebaker International and they tell me what I was sent was the R3 intake valve.

What size is an R3 intake valve supposed to be?

If 1.875 is too big for an R3, do I have a modified valve of some sort?

John; does the label say VLV027 ? if it's a VLV028 they sent you exhaust valves!

The invoice says VLV027. The box has a typed label for VLV 007 valves (289 R1/R2 Heavy Duty Stainless....except R3, R4 ...) with the "except" crossed out. On the end the box has handwritten on it "800535? R3 R4 Intk" The number 800535 is Studebaker International's catalog part number for R3 intake valves. The fact that the labelling is all screwed up makes me suspicious that they have sent me the wrong valves. But I don't know what size R3 valves are supposed to be - the info from T-Bow said 1.875 but I don't know if that is right and his phone is always busy. Studebaker International says they will call me back. So I wondered if any of you guys might know the size.

There is no difference between the head size of the valves in (late) 259's, 289's, R1's, and R2's. For all, the intakes are 1.6562 and the exhausts are 1.5312 (per shop manual).

I'd have to believe the R3's are bigger, but I don't have those numbers.

Bob, thank you. That is consistent with the info from T-Bow. I think Studebaker International sent me the wrong valves.
