  • Transmission / Overdrive: Tips needed from guys that's been down this road before

    I'm going back with a 259 and 3 speed/OD into Buttercup ('55 C body).
I have a jeep shifter cover and the overdrive tranny that came out of Leo.
    I plan to marry them.
How many of you have done this?
Any and all tips will be greatly appreciated.

You have to elongate the two rear holes about 3/16" and cut the low/reverse shift fork off and move it 3/16" inch back and it will work great. When using the overdrive you weld a plate on it so when shifting to reverse it worked like normal. Without this plate you had to pull the handle out every time you wanted to back up.

Also, if you search 'T-86 Jeep shifter' you will get several hits.

Something about that Clutch Housing does not look right for a 259/289 V8, was "Leo" a Six, or maybe a '51-'54 232 V8?
I do not see the Starter bolt holes on the left. It could just be that rear view that does not show all.

The Jeep shifter cover may fit as-is. Depends upon the year of the Jeep shifter, and the year of the T86. The one I did for Dick's Kart hauler fit as-is. But I did weld an extension finger on the low-reverse shift fork to operate the OD lockout rail when reverse was selected. There is a write-up on that job posted here, with pics.

I accessed Gary Ashe's article and it was very informative.
I also accessed Gordr's post where he did the conversion for the Kart Hauler.
They used different methods for the OD lock out mod.
The second half of Gord's post (part2) seems to be missing. I would like to read it in it's entirety.
Maybe someone with more computer smarts than me can retrieve part 2.

Here was the latest thread on that.

I link to Gord's Part 1 and all the pics he used.

Gord jumps in with some suggestions...

Thanks Dick, that's exactly what I wanted.

You can't go wrong following Gord's method.

I've posted this before, but here's the Kart hauler with his trany shifter conversion...
