what front shocks would be good for a 54 pick up with a 259?

The stock OEM replacement Gabriel Gas Shocks or Monroe for 1/2 Ton Trucks are the same for all Engines.

While you're under there, check the spring eye bushings on both ends of the spring. The Studebaker design there is just bad science, having the shackle bolt wearing directly against the soft rubber. The bushings "perish" after only a couple of years of driving. Fortunately, they're cheap and easy to replace, because they need replacing often.
