Does anyone know the difference between the two transmissions? What is the extra gear for on the 4 speed? is it a granny 1st gear or is it just move gears to get to 1:1 fourth gear?

I think it was simply a granny low for first. My 7E spec book says that first in 3 sp was 3.34. First in the 4sp was 6.40.

Yes, a granny gear. Also, the T9 4-speed box has no synchros in it. Crash box. The T90/T86 3-speed has synchros on 2nd and 3rd.

The other thing is the majority of Studebaker 3-speeds were overdrive. This made them a four or five speed transmission and by far the preferable transmission in a light truck.

The T9 crash box is difficult for most newcomers to master. I grew up with them and wouldn't care to ever own another.
