  • '54 Starliner Cowl Tag Interpretation Anyone?

The cowl tag on this 1954 Commander Starliner reads:

    5H-K5
    1036

Can anyone tell me what this means? Thanks.

The '5H' designates '54 Commander series. The 'K' means it's a hardtop body. The '5' is the trim level. And it's the 1036th body welded up.

Trim level 5 would be Regal.

Thanks. Pardon my lack of knowledge about this, but how many trim levels were there for the Starliner, and what were they?

Also, someone asked where the car was built. Where on the car would I look to find that information? Is there another tag, other than the VIN and cowl tags?

There were two trim levels--the DeLuxe (base model) and the Regal (high end.)

As for where it was built, you can determine that from the body serial number--it is located on a plate on the front of the frame surrounding the driver's door. Post that number here and we can interpret it for you.

Only one trim level for a 54 Starliner. 5 (Regal)

Good point Ed. Thanks for the correction. Champion types have a different serial number range. I should have said 4,500th COMMANDER of all body styles.

Just as another point of clarification, it's the 1036th K body welded up. The other bodies had other sequences.

Which Studebaker in the Club has the LOWEST cowl tag body number (earliest body for that year)...in ANY body style? Could be the Gent up north that owns the '55 Speedster factory showcar with body #2.
Are there any cowl tags with #1 on them out there? (Any body style)

I think that this request should be a separate topic from the guy asking about his 1954.
