Hi-
I have 'heard'[}:)] there were more than one style of door exterior handles for the pre-war M series trucks.

can anyone confirm/deny?

I am at work and do not have access to my parts books, but I think you may be right (I have only had '45 and up M series trucks). I seem to recall the earlier ones were more "stylized" with some grooves around the handle while the later one's weren't.

I will check later on. You may also want to post on the Studebaker Truck Talk site, though a bunch of those guys have heaeded out to the Can-Am meet and also to Omaha.

As I thought, there are in fact 2 styles of door handles. The first (part number 274215W in chrome) is more squared, has 2 grooves on the leading edge and grips on the back side. It was used up to M5-4758, M15-1195 and M16-3251. This same handle (part number 649350X2 in gray) was used on M5-4758 to M5-5001, M15-1195 to M15-2001 and M16-3251 to M16-5201.

They then went back to part number 274215W (in chrome) and used part number 649350X3 (in black) up to serial numbers M5-11011, M15A-4160, M16-12811 and M17-1409. After the above serial numbers, they switched to part number 652280 (in chrome) for the remainder of the production run.

Based on the fact that the change occurred after the introduction of the post war M15A, all prewar trucks would have the earlier style. I do know that the 1945 M15 C-9 cab trucks started at serial number 2001. Page 266 of the parts book contains the information that you need.

I thought I had read this somewhere. I have a 41 M15 and the tag reads 110. very early truck.
Where is this parts book you use?

The parts book is next to my computer for easy reference. I bought a whole box of Studebaker parts books and shop manuals at a chapter meet back in the mid '70's. They come in handy to this day. You can find reproduction manuals on e-Bay and through the various vendors. I would highly recommend picking up one as well as a shop manual for your truck.

Was there stainless overlays on the center grille verticle bars -besides the center piece they all have?

The chrome mouldings (overlays) were part of the deluxe equipment group and very, very few were produced with this scheme and all prior to WW 2. The center grille has 6 chrome strips in addition to the normal center strip and each of the side grilles had 10 strips. Also, the deluxe package also included a chrome moulding down each side of the hood.

Only my '62 Hawk resides at the house. Part of the deal when we left the country and moved back to the suburbs was that I would have a place for my treasures. In seven + years my wife has probably only been there 1/2 dozen times. Works out well.
