  • Driving from Philadelphia to Dover

Seems I have to drive, is it easy, or easy to get lost?

Just need to get to hotel from airport.

Driving Directions - Philadelphia Airport (PHL) to Dover Downs Hotel & Casino

Directions from Philadelphia Airport (PHL) are simple, and there are basically only 3 turns from the time you leave the airport till you arrive at Dover Downs Hotel & Casino.

As you leave the airport you'll get on the main interstate I-95 and head south. Go approximately 28 miles and take EXIT 4A onto STATE ROUTE 7-South (towards Christiana). This road becomes (changes it's name to) STATE ROUTE 1-South. Go approximately 36 miles and take EXIT 104 (Scarborough Road/North Dover Exit). As you exit, stay to the left. Make the left at the first light (onto Route 13 south). Hotel is 2 blocks down on your left.

Note that on State Route 1 there will be two tolls. Depending on the day & time, the first toll will be $1 or $2 (have USD cash on hand for this). The second toll is on the exit ramp for North Dover. This toll is 50 cents (have 2 quarters ready to toss in the basket as this toll both is un-manned).

Does this mean that there is no hotel provided or private carrier shuttle service from the airport to Dover Downs? It seems like there should be. I will be driving, but I am sure that a lot of SDC members will be flying in.

Mark told me they're looking into busses, but these are $1000 each. Shuttles exist, just how long the wait is before departure is unknown. Wouldn't want to wait several hours until they're full.

Directions seem easy even for one new to driving on the right.

Will post details of my arrival into Philadelphia when known, maybe someone can give me a ride.

        Time will tell.

It's an easy drive down. It takes me about 2 1/2 hours from my place and I'm about an hour and 20 minutes from Philly so figure less then 2 hours or so.

Thanks Arthur, I'm sure to have a nice time. Too far to come and too costly to be disappointed.

Ok Denny, Mark thought it was "interesting" to drive on the long Chesapeake Bay bridge. Also longer, but all suggestions welcome.

That is a fun bridge to drive on. Last time I went over it with the family it was during a really bad storm but it made it more interesting.

I've done the drive many times. It's quite easy unless you land in Philly at, say, 4PM and have to contend with rush hour. If you are nervous about it at all, a GPS will make it ridiculously easy.

Now if you want to stretch it into 4 or 5 hours for a ride you will never forget, drive to Cape May, NJ, take the Cape May-Lewes ferry and drive back up to Dover. I promise you it will be worth the extra time.

Just make sure you stay on the correct side of the road up here, Avantilover, we would hate to see you in a head on collision. Me? I'm driving from Iowa... but alas, not in one of my Studebakers.

                              Yeah,

The bay bridge is a riot - especially on a windy, rainy day. If you want to see another interesting bridge project, and you've got the time, head farther south and check out the the 20+ miles of weirdness of the Bay Bridge Tunnel. Every time I drove that thing the hair would go up on the back of my neck.
