They were actually designed to be flexible. It was fairly common "back in the day". Similar vintage Chevy's are the same.
I think Studebaker might have gone a little over board with the 53, however, but I don't think I'd worry about it (especially if it is the Studebird). Installing the wing shaped crossmember from a 54 and up C/K is probably the only thing I'd consider.
If for another project, Joe is spot on. You might even graft in an X member from a wagon, convertible, or Avanti.Dick Steinkamp
