  • Frame / Springs: '53 Frame Needs Work

    As many of you know the '53 frame is nortoriously weak. Just wondering about ideas to strengthen it. Thanks.

      They were actually designed to be flexible. It was fairly common "back in the day". Similar vintage Chevy's are the same.

      I think Studebaker might have gone a little over board with the 53, however, but I don't think I'd worry about it (especially if it is the Studebird). Installing the wing shaped crossmember from a 54 and up C/K is probably the only thing I'd consider.

      If for another project, Joe is spot on. You might even graft in an X member from a wagon, convertible, or Avanti.
