  • Rear Axle: Rear end question for '51

I have a question about rear end restoration. I want to get my'51 ready for driving (enough tinkering.) I am worried about my rear end. A neighbor told to check fluid level and take off the back plate. What should I be looking for? The car has been sitting for at twenty years. Thank you.

For a car sitting that long, the rear end fluid has probably turned to grease or worse. I'd remove the cover and clean it out (messy job), then reattach the cover with a new gasket and fill it with the proper gear lube.
