  • Brakes: 74 Avanti Brake Bleeding

I know things are not supposed to go as planned in this hobby but I just hit the jackpot. I bleed the 74 Avantis brakes with an HF vacuum bleeder and in less than 30 min. the pedal is up better than 1/2 with no booster help. You can push the pedal hard and no movement.

    Why/How -- !!

The system is totally new. Ford dual master cylinder, proportioning valve, Line Lock solenoid, all new lines, Turner front brakes and all new rear cylinders and shoes.

Hooked up the HF vacuum system to the right rear cylinder and pulled the trigger. It took a while but fluid started slowly to come out. It never got to a stream just kept coming. Let an ounce or so accumulate and thought the line can't be full. So pulled the line off the fitting and put on a clear line. Opened the bleeder and a steady stream of fluid started out. Shut it off and did the same thing to the other three wheels in the typical order. Cracked each valve after using the pump on them and fluid ran out so I tried the brakes, Hard pedal. Waa-Hoo.

Interestingly, I never bench bled the M/C as the Internet said that it wasn't necessary. It wasn't. You can see the amount of DOT-5 I used as the clear bottle was about 3/4+ full when I started.

Just love it when the Internet is right and something works as it is described. Best $20 I've spent in a while.

`Line Lock solenoid`???...now that made me laugh. Does your wife know what you're up to?...my wife would say "what's this button do?" and then I'd show her, and then she'd say something like "if you're going to drive like this I don't want to ride with you" and then I'd say "should I let you get out here?" and the rest of the conversation would go downhill from there. Would love to have a ride in your car when it's done...

    cheers, Junior.

Let's just say that I'm a somewhat "BETTER" driver with Judy in the car. She flinches too easily in here advanced years. Her curiosity centers around "How much was that?" rather than "What's that do?" Luckily though, she knows how much I enjoy building them and she sees all the bank accounts so she has a handle on the fact that I have essentially added enough by selling other cars to pay for the next effort, give or take.

As far as the line-lock, growing up is highly overrated

Hopefully, we'll meet up at a meet somewhere and trade rides.

my question is..it appears you don't need the M/C cover on when using this system. I always thought you needed the cover to create the correct pressure in the system. Thanks, Lee
