What's black, yellow and 8,000 pounds? This street rod

Royal Oak— When Jim “Snapper” Schomaker drives his rig down Woodward Avenue, everybody pays attention ... and gets out of the way.
Schomaker drives the mother of all hybrids, an 8,000-pound “street rod” that is half Studebaker and half Caterpillar excavator, which would make it a “Caterbaker” or a “Studepillar.”
He was out on Woodward early Friday afternoon as crowds began building in anticipation of Saturday’s Dream Cruise.
“My grandfather was a frustrated excavator who owed six Caterpillar machines,” said Schomaker, 35. “I used to ask him, ‘Why Caterpillar,’ and he said it was because they were the best.”
Somewhere along the road, Schomaker’s grandfather bought a 1928 Studebaker that he just never got around to restoring, so he offered it to his grandson.
Schomaker decided a Caterpillar-inspired hot rod on a Studebaker chassis would be a great project.
“The first thing was to consult with officials from Caterpillar who told me what kind of parts I would need and where I could find them,” said Schomaker, who rents furniture for a living.
“I ended up looking all over western Pennsylvania, including a lot of junk yards.”
Schomaker worked on the “Cat” with a friend in a two-car garage, and the end result was a beauty painted in Caterpillar’s iconic black and yellow colors. It has a 10-gear transmission, rumbles like a hungry T-Rex and gets 20.2 miles per gallonhttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/icon1.png (http://www.detroitnews.com/article/20130816/AUTO02/308160085/What-s-black-yellow-8-000-pounds-street-rod?odyssey=mod%7Cnewswell%7Ctext%7CFRONTPAGE%7Cs#) on the freeway.
“This is probably my 13th trip to Detroit for the Dream Cruise,” said Schomaker, who was accompanied by friendshttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/icon1.png (http://www.detroitnews.com/article/20130816/AUTO02/308160085/What-s-black-yellow-8-000-pounds-street-rod?odyssey=mod%7Cnewswell%7Ctext%7CFRONTPAGE%7Cs#) Amanda Winfield, Dan Auchey and Allan Stewart, all from Pittsburgh.
How did Schomaker originally end up coming in for the cruise?
“I jumped into a friend’s carhttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/icon1.png (http://www.detroitnews.com/article/20130816/AUTO02/308160085/What-s-black-yellow-8-000-pounds-street-rod?odyssey=mod%7Cnewswell%7Ctext%7CFRONTPAGE%7Cs#) and he said, “Hey, we’re going to a dream cruise,’ and I said OK,” Schomaker said. “I’ve been coming back ever since.”

There's a few Youtube videos of his build from the last couple of years, and it looks like he had finally gotten it completely painted. Anyway, to ask if it's diesel powered, why of course!!
