I have three Stude starters -- three different housings or end pieces. The powder coated one fits a 4 sp bellhousing. No tag. 10 7/8" long Can anyone help with what the other two fit?
middle one is 11" long and has a 2 3/4" end but is shaped different than the top one. the tag says autolite MDU 7026 11S
Top one is 12" long and it's tag says MDU 7005 11S

MDU is a four field starter
used on the R series motors. The MDY is a two field starter used on most
    all other V-8s

    automatic - manual
    MDU 7026, MDU 7025

    No data on a MDU 7005 ?

The 7005 is for 6cylinder cars.

No wonder I could not ID it. BTW, don't count on the tag for ID since the AT nose is often swapped for the stick shift.

Thanks, that was a big help, now I can tag these with the right ID and put them on the shelf.
question-- why swap the auto for the manuel snout? I know I'm missing something here.

The snout would be changed for one application or the other - auto or manual. Basically, the distance back that the mount flange is from the tip of the snout is what accomodates the difference of distance of the ring gear on a torque convertor vs a flywheel. The ring gear on a flywheel is relatively close to the rear of the engine whereas the ring gear on a torque convertor sits further away from the rear of the engine and the longer "snout" allows the starter's bendix gear to reach that more distant ring gear.

Right, what he said. The starters are apparently identical other than the snout casting, so if you say are converting from an auto to a stickshift, you don't have to buy a a whole new starter, just find the correct snout and swap it on to your existing starter. I actually just did this with the MDU 7026 on my car, works fine.
