  • Identify a Studebaker V8

It has bolts thru the center of the valve covers and a small carb that is open towards the cowl. How can I identify the engine I have? It was swapped into the 54 Starlight Champion I have. It has a 3 speed with an OD that is cable operated.
    54 C Land Speed - 179.644 mph
    59 Lark Cruiser - 14.58 @ 99.30
    60 Lark Gasser 1 - 10.82 @ 122.83
    60 Lark
    63 Lark Slammed - 11.62 @ 116.3

if you are looking at the front of the engine next to the oil fill tube on your right (drivers side) there is a stamp in the block example would be P222103. that is the number you need to tell what you have. on the passengers side is a casting number it is raised up it doesnt help much.
it might take some cleaning to find it. if it has an oil filter attached to the oil fill tube it should be under it.
    hope that helped

How much is this thing worth? It is not running, so I am looking to find out what the core value is. Thanks for the help.

Need a little more info to offer that kind of advice. What kind of shape is it in overall? Is it rusty? Parts missing? How's the floor and the trunk? Photos would help.

Core value of a early 259 is $100 on a good day.

If anyone wants it I would be happy with $100.

What is the 3 speed with OD worth?

                  Rear?

                  Driveshafts?

York, PA ?? You are right there where the big annual Studebaker Swapmeet is held!! You shouldn't need much help to sell that stuff if you take it there! What about the '54 Champion Starlight Coupe is that for sale?

I posted this at Racing Studebakers...
I was racing at the Grassroots Moroesports Challenge in Florida last year and met a guy who lived 7 miles from me in PA. We have become good friends. After working on a new race car projects in my barn one night, he asked "What is your dream car to build?" I laughed because I was sure that he was expecting to hear a Corvette or Camaro or similar. I had a 54 Chevy and a 50 Stude P-U in high school. I have always wanted a Starlight. I have been trying to get a Starlight coupe for 24 years to build into a Land Speed car. When I told him about the Stude he laughed. Well fast forward 7 months from our conversation to 3 weeks ago. I get this call, "Hey Dude, I found your car!" Well, long story short, I picked up a junk yard refugee. 1954 Starlight with V-8 and 3 speed with OD. The parts are posted on their for sale page. The car is not for sale.

Hopefully you are not offended by my efforts to bring a junkyard refugee back to life. The car was originally a 6 cylinder.

No offense taken. There are a lot of alternately powered Studes cruising these pages. There will be some discussion about the work involved in altering all the necessaries as opposed to just building the Stude V-8 in to it's potential. Of all the possible swaps, the GM small block will be the easiest. Give the frame a good examination and upgrade the brakes.

The V-8 conversion is a piece of cake. After installing a SBC into a Fiat 118G, everything else is easy. The frame is in good shape. I am most concerned about the front suspension and brakes. I have not found any good spindle swaps. Although a Impala spindle is tall enough. Another thought was to modify the lower a arm and use a Camaro strut.

Is there any good sites to post the engine for sale? It is a 55 259.
