Searched their web page for Studebakers at the Barrett-Jackson auction currently going on in Reno during Hot August Nights and found this one that went across the block on the first day. It's a very nice looking original truck. I can't remember seeing a Champ sell for this kind of money. Must have been at least two Studebaker lovers there!

Beautiful truck! Never saw back-up lights or pinstrips on a Champ before. Price was incredible.

I couldn't believe a six brought that much. I hope someone who wanted just that model and planned to keep it bought the truck. A dealer would be disappointed in a resale.
I have trouble believing what I see on those televised auctions . They remind me too much of the "reality" shows.

Local club member sold a 61 with the "Farm Box" & V/8 with OD 3-4 yrs ago for 18K,it was flawless & at the time he thought he done well.

Somebody has more $$$ than they can handle & it will be a long time before they can recoup their investment.

Wow - I guess I really need to rethink how much my 7E7 is insured for...

With those big white walls, I would expect the driver to get out wearing a full length fur coat ;)

I was watching that Barrett-Jackson series, too. Prices seemed on the low side. Nice rides selling for way less than build costs. The Champ must have been impressive.

Looking through the list of vehicles, there are several pickups done in this same style with the fancy wood sideboards and wide whites. Check out this 49 Ford F1 that sold even higher than the Champ.

Here is another similar Ford coming up. They are all so similar it makes me wonder if they are out of the same shop that has found a niche market.

And another F1: http://www.barrett-jackson.com/application/onlinesubmission/lotdetails.aspx?ln=381&aid=523

And some Chevys: http://www.barrett-jackson.com/application/onlinesubmission/lotdetails.aspx?ln=453&aid=523

My own impression of the Barrett-Jackson auctions is that the bidders have more money than brains. I didn't watch the current auction because I'm turned off by the hoopla. Just my opinion.

I was hoping this truck would cross the block during the show but it went across during one of their breaks so did not get much additional information on it. Steve Manianti (sp) seems to have a fair amount of knowledge about Studebakers so was interested to hear what he would say about it. After a break I saw the truck listed near the bottom of the screen showing the last 3 cars that went across the block. I was disappointed it not get air time but was surprised by the amount it sold for. Especially for a six with no overdrive.
This is the ONLY Studebaker in the Reno auction so not much reason to watch the rest of it. I agree that people at the auctions tend to spend more on vehicles then one would expect them to sell for, however, I keep hearing that truck values are really on the rise. Maybe we should not be so surprised at what this Champ sold for.

I don't remember ever seeing mirrors on the front fenders of a pickup before.

Yep, that is not right. They should be on the leading edge of the door and they are hard enough to see out of there - cannot imagine how hard it is to see with them that far away...

I had seen the list of vehicles on their web site & was watching for the Champ to get aired, but was disappointed that they skipped over it. I had the recorder going too but when they skipped it, I shut it off & went to bed. 28g's is a lot more than I had expected it to go for especially a straight 6. Perhaps my 62 3/4 ton with 5 speed overdrive should get some work done before the R-2 Hawk!!

I hadn't even noticed the mirror on the fender. It not only looks strange, but it appears to be an R series mirror that's meant ti be mounted at the cowl.
Also did you notice that there was no emblem in the horn button?

This mirror bracket is the opposite side and not chrome, but you can see what I mean.

The brackets were basically the same - this truck just has it in the wrong spot. Here is another example of a misplaced mirror - this one is too far back on the door.

This '61 has the mirror bracket in the factory correct spot:

For $30,800 I'd move my mirror to the fender and put on passenger car caps! Of course I should laugh. I thought the M series trucky mirrors looked hokey on the smooth Champ lines and opted for door mounted car mirrors. It is a beautiful piece of 4 wheel art and the six is guts enough to move it in and out of the museum/garage a couple of times a year.

And, I'm a fan of the rounded fender box than the Dodge box on the Champ. I see it as much more natural lines. Like the trucky mirrors the Dodge box looks like they were just cleaning out the warehouse using up odds and ends like the Lark cab.... I think Johnny Cash may have been inspired by the '61 Champ:

Maybe that is why every one was taking pictures of my beloved Champ in the Parade this AM....

I bought a pair of those mirrors for my last Champ & they rusted within months. Same with the tailgate chains & brackets I had chromed.
Rust is the enemy! The salt air doesn't help either. Now the bumpers are starting too.

/Cut/Also did you notice that there was no emblem in the horn button?

Champs have a Black out dummy Horn Button with no Emblem, but this one has a peanut butter Jar Lid or something in there with no Lens, not Studebaker!

I wondered what they did to the springs, that Truck is way higher than it should be, and does NOT help the look of a Short Bed. :(
The Pin stripes just make the body lines look worse, because of the Curve of the original lines, the Cab body lines and bed body lines normally APPEAR to very closely line up, UNTIL you paint the edge of them with Pin Stripes! :(

Would I pay more than $3500.00 for that useless Toy? Not on your life!
