I'm sorry if this has been posted before.
A lot of the article in turn references Studebaker sources anyhow.

Sounds like Studebaker kind of strung Porsche along, or Porsche went ahead without Studebaker's real design requirements, and John Z Delorean (!) did not think US drivers would care for rear engine swing axle handling.
