  • Hot Rod Magazine (Sept, 2013 and Jan 1967) - 'The Boss' - 1939 Stude

    Nice article.
    First class work.

(snippet copy; See link or read magazine for complete article)

Randy and Yvonne began searching for The Boss and learned that it had continued to race and had been wrecked. Assuming the car was gone, the couple began buying parts and donor cars to build a replica. They had already bought three Studebaker donors when some of the photos they'd posted on www.JalopyJournal.com in November 2010 caught the attention of the car's then-owner. Stored in Delaware since 1980, its firewall and the floor were gone, along with the front axle and drivetrain, but the body was solid. Well, it did have hundreds of holes drilled in the body's structure, but that fit the car's racing past. Randy and Yvonne purchased the Stude and showed it to Charlie to confirm it was indeed The Boss. Charlie put a magnet on the hinges, and it didn't stick. It had to be The Boss. The factory Studebaker hinges were steel, and Charlie had cast duplicates in aluminum to remove weight from the front of the car, just one of a number of weight-saving modifications he made in the early '60s.
Over the course of the next two years, the car was returned to its late-'65 state with many period-correct pieces along with a few faithful reproductions. The car was finished just before it was transported to our Homecoming show, where it made its unofficial debut. It has since been kept under wraps on the East Coast. Randy and Yvonne have planned a special unveiling for Charlie, who helped in the restoration but hasn't seen the completed car.

              Jeff,
Will talk it over with my other half and see if we can't fit that show into our schedule. We do a lot of other shows with our car club with her 35 Chevy sedan ,but I really would like to attend that one. Randy

Cool article, but it's giving me serious deja vu. I feel like I red this somewhere a month or two ago.

Randy, this turned out amazingly. Nice work bringing it back. "The Boss" is one of the coolest looking gassers I've ever seen, Stude or non-Stude.

                  Also, welcome to the forums!

Nice collection...........I do the pedal car thing myself. In the process of restoring a pedal boat, tin lizzy and an English Austin pedal car. Heres a shot of our 33 Willys coupe I've owned for almost 35 years.
Never heard of the drag your Studebaker day. I don't think they would let us race the coupe without making too many changes for safety. The seat belts alone are over 45 years old.

Hey Randy, I was kinda making an inside joke about the "Race" your Studebaker day. Seeing that you are new to the forum, it was not polite of me to leave that hanging out there without further explanation. So...welcome to the forum and please accept my apologies.

Refer to the following link for a better explanation about "International Drive Your Studebaker Day.

If you'll look, we have an entire sub-forum dedicated to the event. Check it out.

If you don't have one "street legal" to drive...you could always load it up on the trailer and haul it around with some of your local Studebaker fans.

So that's were that picture came from...........I always thought that it was one of Charlie Garretts photos. I have about 115 pictures of the car that I got from the original owner (Charlie) of when he started racing it back in the early 60's when it was red. Sometime in the middle of 65 he rebuilt the Stude and decided to paint it black. Thanks..... I'm always new (old) pictures of my Studebaker. Was that taken at Indy???
