  • Dirt track studebaker

i was talking to an old dirt track racer a while back Larry Gingery. Larry worked for a Studebaker dealer in Ohio Near Cinncinatti in the late 50's and though the end in 66. Anyway Larry went on to tell me that he raced a Studebaker at Dirt tracks back then. He said he ordered in 1963 a 1964 Daytona 289 r-1 4spd. when he got it he pulled all the glass and interior. pulled the heads and intake and took them to a Studebaker Genesis (larry's words) guy he knew and had them worked over. He said he only won 1 feature with that car, but won many heats and was always in the feature and was a crowd favorite. he said he didnt know exactly waht year he quit racing the car, but he raced it until he could straighten it enough to make it go in deliberate circles and never had any engine problems...

now does anyone in that area remember such a car or man???
if you do can you find a picture????

just some more studebaker racing history for ya....

There used to be some dirt track Studebakers around Kansas driven by a SDC member named Lynn Hanafin.

Dan Miller was telling me that he once bought a R2 GT Hawk, and had intended to use it as a dirt track car. But then he changed his mind and put the R2 in a little '64 Challenger two door.

None of this will answer Erin's question, but I feel that it's sorta 'on topic', so here it is~

While I was stationed in Jacksonville, Florida (the second time) I met Roy Hastings. He owns several nice Studes, and a Pre War Packard or two. He used to drive at the local dirt track there in Jax~ first in a '52 h/t, then in several different '53/4 coupes. He was very sucessful at it I might add!!! In Dick Datson's 'Stude Tech Tips' book you will find some reprinted newspaper articles about Roy on pages 7 & 8.
Last I remember Roy had a '55 President State sedan, a '56 GH, and a '54 coupe that looked bone stock, but was NOT by any means!!!

Anything to keep the thread running long enough for the right person to look at it and go i remember him.... thanks guys

i have a 63 lark 4door that is as close to being a complete gonner as they get. i have thought several times about running it at the local dirt track. but alas i think it will be dismembered to help the great good. poor old car sometiems at night you can hear its call "IF I ONLY HAD A FRAME" a slight pause then "A FLOOR, FENDER, BUMPERS, AND DOORS WOULD BE NICE TOO"
poor thing i think i going to have to put it down...

The only racing Studebakers in this area (Mid-Hudson Val.,NY) that I remember are a friend's '56 Golden Hawk circle track car, another '56 Golden Hawk drag car, my '57 President Classic that I track drag raced and the Larks that ran in the Petite LeMans at Lime Rock that were prepared at Jocko's Speed Shop and one was driven by Jocko.
