  • '63 Avanti R2 coming out of mothballs

    Hi Folks,

After a long rest I'm getting my R2 Avanti, 63R-3287 back on the road. I've been out of the loop re parts vendors and available items for a while and would appreciate suggestions re locating the following:

Rebuilder for the AFB carb and Carter fuel pump

    Turquoise front seat upholstery

Turquoise/black "salt & pepper" complete carpet set

"Paxton Supercharger" tag above the S/C pulley

    Thanks!

It would help to know where you are. Or at least what part of the country (world?).
By the way welcome to the forum.

Thanks Rob, I live in Woodbridge, CA South of Sacramento. I haven't posted in quite a while and looks like my old posts & data were purged due to inactivity.

I've owned a few Studes in the past. '53 Champ HT, '54 Commander HT (with a 265 Corvette engine), '55 Speedster, '56 Golden Hawk, '57 Packabaker Clipper, '58 Commander HT, '58 Packard Hawk '63 Champ 3/4 ton, '64 Wagonaire, '64 R1 Super Hawk and now I'm down to just the '63 R2 Avanti.

          Cheers,

          John

You can put the leftover mothballs in the gas tank to boost the octane rating of your fuel. I saw that on Mythbusters, they said it really worked....

Might try that. As you know, the R2's don't care too much for 87 octane gasahol.

Actually, my dad and his buddies swore by mothballs to pep up their cars in the 30s and 40s. Dad was a chemist and he was pretty sure it worked. They have to be the old style naptha type, not the newer kind.

As far as the AFB carb and Carter fuel pump rebuild, many forum posters would probably agree with Me that Dave Thibeault would be a good choice. (Although there are other good rebuilders in the club)
Dave's tel # is 978-897-3158. Studebaker International would have the supercharger decal.

SMS in Oregon will make the carpet sets for you. They also have the Turquoise material (vinyl). http://www.smsautofabrics.com/company.php

From another viewpoint, when I purchased my 74 Avanti, the PO had left a couple of boxes of mothballs inside for several years to keep the local vermin out.

I totally removed the interior and it still took a few months to get the body aired out and the stench gone. The seats are stored in an area next door and they still reek of that smell. Nothing is going back into it that came out of it. If it wasn't for the Hantavirus is vermin poop, I rather clean that out than the mothball infested stuff I ran into.
