  • Avanti Wheels

I am trying to put Halibrand-looking wheels on a 63. Each time the local tire shop guy calls the distributor, he gets a different set of specs. According to them, Torq-Thrust II and D definitely will not work. Even with help, they can't spell "Studibaker."

So I called The Tire Rack in South Bend, which, back in my Pirelli P7 days, I thought of as the best tire shop in the country (the tires on my 63 came from them). Studebaker and Avanti do not come up on their new computer screen. They have no wheels or tires for "that application." When flat-out asked, they flat out told me they are not interested in our business. Please tell your friends.

i ordered my Torque Thrust D's from Tire Rack for the GT Hawk pictured, but told them what I wanted, not the application.

Thanks, guys. FWIW, I had the specs I wanted, and wasn't able to get that far--the "kid" cut me off in mid-offset. I told him they were "just like Chrysler" and that didn't get his attention. I was about to say "See that factory across the street?" when I remembered they had moved. What a "setback." Bob, I'll check with newstalgia and see if I can hack them off, too...

Jon Myer is still trying to get enough orders to repop the Halibrands. I think he's close now.

If you have the width, offset, backspacing, etc. that you need, don't even mention "Studebaker". Just order the wheels.

Ask for Walt at Tire Rack. If he still works there he should know. He was known as John when he worked at Avanti.

Torque Thrust D's work fine on an Avanti. I get a lot of comments on how well they look on the car. Mine are 15x6 with the 4.5" bolt circle. The offset & backspacing are close to the origonals and the spokes are shaped so they clear the calipers. I did specify the car and they supplied lug nuts with a shoulder to fit the rims and a 3/4" hex so I can use the Avanti lug wrench.
