  • Steering: Column riding up

Steering column jacket on a 1963 Champ, which I had replaced, has moved up towards the steering wheel about 1/8" within the last year (very few miles). This is now causing rubbing at the bottom of the steering wheel & collar. Ideas on why (e.g., insufficient tightening at dash, etc.). Thanks

Are you sure the column is moving up? Perhaps your steering wheel or steering shaft is moving down.

Or...the steering wheel is getting closer to the road wheels (what they used to be called in old Chevy parts books).

one of the sad realities of the Champ truck is the flexing required for truck service on a Rube Goldberg Lark front clip. In some cases the cowl can develop cracks for this body-to-frame mounting shortcoming....just FWIW.....2 things that come to mind are the lack of securing the square headed bolts inside the collar, or that they simply have loosened or other....you could have a poorly tightened collar to gear pinch bolt.....GL

Definitely the jacket has moved towards the steering wheel. You can see the skid mark at the steering box from where it started and where it is now; however, will check both the square headed bolts inside the collar and the collar to gear pinch bolt. The flexing of the clip is an issue so tightening may have to be very routine. Thanks
