  • Wheels / Tires: 53 commander wheels and tires

I'm planning to put Turner disc brakes on the front of my 53. What is the proper back spacing for the front and rear wheels? What is the largest tire size that can comfortably fit on the rear?

I might be able to answer part of your question. My 1953 Commander Starlight coupe is basically stock, except for Mercury wheels (unfortunately I can't find the paperwork with year & model right now). Of course I had to use the Mercury lug nuts, and I attached P215/75R15 Kelly tires. I would not go any larger than that as there is not a lot of room in the rear wheel wells. I have no clearance issues in the front either.

With the proper back spacing, I've run 245/50-16" tires on 8" rims on the back of a C/K.

FWIW, I've found many rear axles aren't centered any more, if they ever were. Getting a max width tire requires some checking and fiddling to get the axle centered so there's equal space on each side for the tires.

I have 265-75 R15's on the rear of Frosty.
