  • Rear Axle: Possible Rear End problem

I have my '51 Champion up on jack stands and gave it its first spring-time startup. I could hear a intermittent light clunking sound coming from the rear-end, so put the car in gear, got out for observation. The clunking was coming from the right side and I noticed that the wheel was not turning, but just jumping a couple of inches every 2-3 seconds . Is this normal or am I having an issue with tight brakes or bearings on that side of the car? Possibly another problem? Thanks for the replies.

The rearend is what is referred to as a "open" rearend as compared to a limited slip or locker design. So to answer your question what your observing is a normal function. The wheel that turns either left or right side will be the wheel with the "looser" brake adjustment.
