My brother's 57 Transtar pickup has been having fuel supply problems with its full flow 289 transplant ever since the original fuel pump gave out. After we tried two different new Airtex pumps I read a thread advising against them and recommending the Carter pump.
Since he had several Carters, Joe bought a rebuild kit from a vendor while he was in SB and tried to install it. When he placed the new diaphram on the pump body it appeared to be slightly too large. None of the holes in the diaphram line up with their holes in the pump body without pushing the edges in toward the center. Is this normal? The old diaphram is bowed upward in the center from years of use. Was the original flat when it was installed? Forcing the new piece in seems to have caused a leak. :(

There were several different pump #'s on the mounting flange of those Carter V-8 pumps, and I am not sure if some have a diff. size Diaphragm or not. I really would not think so, IF they ARE truly Carter. They do have their name on them right?

I would check the other pumps to see if there are more than one size. As long as you have the small standard pump and not the large Avanti & Jet Thrust R1 or R2 Carter, but you would know it, because they are not even close! But, YES; it should fit level not bowl shaped.

The pump is a Carter, but one thing the vendor told him made me wonder. The guy said that the kit was for a Golden Hawk pump and was heavy duty. The kit also had two different springs to choose from for the check valve. Could this kit actually be for an R engine?

there are two different versions of the standard Carter inverted (55-up) V-8 pump. there's the early glass bowl version and the late metal bowl version. each has a different kit. get a new filter if you have a metal bowl pump as well, I don't think the kits come with filters.
