  • Electrical: Battery for 58 Hawk

Looks like I need to purchase a battery for the 58 Hawk and 64 Champ.
What size and type are you using? I know we have to be careful of battery height in the C/K's.

I'm going to the FLAPS to measure a number 78 battery. I've been told it's the same size as a 24 (which is the correct battery), but the terminals are on the side which lowers overall height by about an inch. Adapters are available to screw into the side terminals on the battery and utilize the standard post type cables (or you can change the cables to match the side terminals). I'll post the results of my research later today. I WILL make sure that the "proper" battery hold down works with the 78 battery!

Nothing is going to look as correct and work as well as a Standard Group 24, the Terminals go inboard on all Studebakers, with the NEGATIVE Post Forward.

Avoid the Group 24F Ford, that has reversed Posts.
The height is never a problem with the correct Battery and the Posts inboard.

It pays to look a little harder or order the correct Battery to avoid the "Replacements".

I just buy a group 24 at FLAPS, and get the highest CCA available, usually 800+.

Buy the Group 24 for proper fit. Some of the big box stores sub a Group 34. Same size but 1 inch shorter
