  • Transmission / Overdrive: Transmission is blocked

It happens several times, that a foward gear and a backward gear (60 Hawk) are blocking the transmission. So the car can't be moved either forwards nor backwards. The gearshift can not change the speed anymore (but could be moved).
The transmission seems to be right when it is disconnected from the gear shift (steering column, 3 speed).

The next time everything is ok, but then it could happen when I choose the backward gear.

Is this a problem in here: steering post gear shift?

    Or the overdrive?

    Thanks for help

You must be a new owner as this problem had been going on for deckades and repair discussions have been posted for that long. You have a wear problem. There are rubber bushings on the shift linkages that wear out. Motor mounts and transmission mounts wear causing binds and lastly parts in you picture wear out specifically the inner tube selector button and the collers that ride on the button. I have rewelded these parts and replace the worn rubber parts to fix the shifting lock up problem as have many others. Be glad that you have that column as the shifting parts have more metal so once a repair is done it may last the rest of the life of the car. I have had to repair the same Lark type vehicle numerous times so I gave up and put in a floor shift but then I have owned one car 32 years.
If you car is ugly then it better be fast.....

I would have this problem only when the engine was hot and in traffic or looking for a parking spot in Boston.......sometimes wiggling the shifter will work...beswt solution found above posts...

Thanks , I found: Shifter Lever Grommet Nr. 532551 (p.199, Stud. Intern.), which rubber also should I order ( two more rubber/steel grommets, fitting a 5/16 rod into a 5/8 hole) ?

            Thanks,

without the help in this forum I would not drive a Studebaker ...

For ordering someone can give me the part numbers (or the Stud.intern. Inc. numbers) instead of the illustration numbers :

            0756-3
            0756-14 532551(stud.intern.)
            0759-16
            0759-19
            0759-7
            0756-79

and the number of shift tube 0756-45
