I'm a little confused about how to check the transmission fluid, and what type to use. In today's vehicles we check the fluid with the car running and the transmission warm. How do you check the fluid in the automatic Studebaker's? I have the manual but it's a little confusing to understand how to check it tells you to add fluid in (L) gear, but doesn't go into detail about how to check the dipstick.

What type of fluid do I use since Type-A is no longer common?

You check the automatic transmission fluid when the engine is hot and it is in drive. (foot on brake or parking brake on but make sure it will hold). (if you open up the cover/dipstick when it is in neutral, it will spatter over your carpet and you can't get a reading)

I prefer old Ford Type F, but many prefer the new GM. The Ford fluid gives a firmer shift change.

I always put a couple of bricks around at least one front wheel just in case... It only takes a few seconds and you are much safer when the car is blocked and cannot move on its own.
