  • Trivia question: What was phone # at Studebaker?

For a little fun project I am working on, I'm trying to find what the phone number was at the Studebaker factory in the 1940s or early '50s when everyone had an exchange name and only 4-5 digits, like TUxedo 5-5555. I looked through all my parts catalogs, shop manuals, service bulletins and NONE of them show a phone number anywhere. I'd like the number for the service department, but I'll take anything that really was a Stude phone number. Surely, the dealers had a number to call, but it's clear that calling South Bend was not encouraged. This wasn't important to me at all until I realized I couldn't find ANY Stude phone numbers - then it became a challenge! Does anyone have old factory correspondence with a phone number on it?

OK, Gary: Having written Studebaker with several ideas for what they ought to be doing circa 1961-1964 (with the accompanying wisdom of a 15-18 year old [}]), I have several personal reply letters from various Important Studebaker People in my file, on Studebaker letterhead of the era. At the bottom of the letterhead, the telephone number ATlantic 9-7111 appears.

However, I suspect it has been disconnected. [8D] BP
We've got to quit saying, "How stupid can you be?" Too many people are taking it as a challenge.

Wow, thanks, Bob! That's just what I wanted. Amazing how this forum can produce even the most arcane information in a short period of time. Your time today was 1 hour, 3 minutes, 5 seconds, by the posting times. Fantastic!

I was working on a little take-off on Gus Wilson and the Model Garage from Popular Science for my next Ocean Bay chapter newsletter edition. Remember him? See http://www.gus-stories.org for some good memories.

Attached are two scans of Studebaker letters from 1963 & 1965. They are from my vast collection of material I own that came from a distant relitive who co-owned Roth Plating in South Bend. I still have the vast majority of studebaker engeering blueprints of all diecast trim pieces Roth was to supply.

In 1963 the Phone number was listed as "Alantic 9-71 11"

In 1965 Studebaker Automotive Sales Corporation (in South Bend) was listed as "289-7111".

Just for kicks I looked up 574-289-7111 to see who might have studes old number and google came up with no results. Who has the guts to call it and find out? [}] LOL

You well could, Bob[:0]: "AT" becomes "28" prefix in the new system: That's still a valid prefix in South Bend. [}] My friend Don Galeziewski's home phone has a 28 prefix, for example. BP
