  • Engine: Dipwad breaks dipstick...film at 11

The dipwad (me) succeeded in breaking my v/8 dipstick (don't ask). Anyone have one to sell before I order one from SI? I thought about getting one o'them chrome handles that are held on the blade with a set screw but I envision that coming loose thus causing me more anguish.

Is the assumption that they are all the same throughout the years that Studebaker made V-8 engines? I would want to check that.

If you have the pieces of the old one, you can compare it to the replacement one and assure yourself that they are the same length.

I know the dipstick on the C/K with the long shallow crankcase was just a hair shorter than the sedan version.

Bob, is it just the cap that came off the stick or did the stick itself actually break?

When my R-1 dipstick broke I was fortunate that the stick was out of the tube. A local fellow who was recommended as a welder wanted $20 plus. I ordered a new one. If you don't have to pay for the repair and you have confidence in the fix go with it.

Thanks, all. 63t-cab is gonna fix me up. BTW, it broke off at the cap.

Question: is the dipstick tube threaded? I need to take it off the old motor and put on the "new" one.

Not threaded, pressed in. Just grab it with pliers and pull straight out. You may need to twist it a little to break free.

Turns out the top half of the tube is press fit but the bottom half is threaded into the pan. Thing was, the old motor is sitting in a cradle and I couldn't see the "nut" at the pan. Anyway, got it out and installed on the new motor.

My poor spinal discs (c1 through tailbone) are degenerating so I cannot work on stuff for long periods of time. So, today I decided I needed some eye candy while working on the car so I sat on the new rocker covers, valley cover and intake. At least I can have something to look at during "breaks".

Good looking motor, Bob, I will mention, you will have a vacumn leak at your choke housing. Edelbrock claims that its there to cool choke, but the difference in the adjustment of the screws and the idle is amazing with the 10-32 hole plugged. Not saying to plug it,but if your mixture adjusting screws don't respond, try plugging and adjusting. Pictures show added 10-32 screw.
