View Full Version : 51 Champion Front Shock Bracket Bolt Question

08-16-2007, 09:13 PM
My recently purchased Champion was making rattling noises. When I checked, I found that new shocks had been put in but the bolts holding the lower shock bolt bracket to the lower control arms probably had broken in the process and studs were welded on. These studs broke off when I tried to tighten them a bit. At this point I removed the front spring and found that the bolts going through the square hole in the lower control arm under the spring were carriage bolts (5/16 x ~1"). Is this correct? And, if so, what grade bolt do I need. I seem to have trouble finding anything but a Grade 1 bolt locally.
Thanks much,

I think you want 531075, BOLT, to control arm 5/16" - 24 x 3/4"

I don't know where you can get them; SASCO shows no stock. However, McMaster-Carr lists a coarse thread (18 TPI) equivalent for $8.22 for a box of 50, if you can't find any locally. P/N 90185A581

I don't honestly know if the originals were Grade 5 or what, but it certainly doesn't seem like a bad idea to err on the side of caution.

Thanks much! I ordered a box of Grade 5 carriage bolts at my local Grainger supply. (Now what to do with the remaining 96 in the box!:D).

Did Granger stock carriage bolts in 5/16-24 (fine)[?]
