  • Studebaker dealers, where are they now

It's nearing 50 since a Studebaker dealer could order and sell you a new Studebaker, yet some former dealers still are in business. For example Smart Motors in Madison, WI, now a Toyota dealer. There must be many former Studebaker dealers out there still in business.

That would be interesting to know.
I guess a good place to start research would be this thread...

    http://forum.studebakerdriversclub.c...ebaker+dealers

Is there a list of dealers (that were active at the end of production) available at the SNM archives?
That would narrow the search down...

Interesting subject for the dead of winter....

Althought not a Studebaker dealer, Jim Moran was the largest Hudson dealer in America after the war, today the company is JM Family Enterprises, the worlds largest private Toyota distributors (Southeast Toyota Distributors). One has to wonder how much harder it would have been for the Japanese companies to establish a dealer base without the former Studebaker, Nash, Packard, Hudson, Willys and Kaiser dealers.

mike cenit: Good point! My wife had heart surgery in Fort Lauderdale and the Jim Moran Heart & Vascular Center was then under construction at the hospital. The Moran family has been very generous in helping good causes. When we lived near Chicago I recall the "Jim Moran, the Hudson Man" ads on TV. The Studebaker dealers in South Bend were generous supporters of local causes.

Newman & Altman, among many other business ventures over the decades, was a Studebaker dealer in South Bend. Current business address of the Newman & Altman "Standard Surplus Div." is 759 W. Chippewa Ave., South Bend, IN.

Anyone care to guess what current business is also in that same former Studebaker building?

I thought Standard Surplus was in the Carriage Factory Building across the Street from the former Engineering Build. where the new SASCO was on Sample St.

IF that were the site, it is now the County Jail.

                  Chippewa St. ?

I have two dealerships for you:

Lakeview Motors, formerly Studebaker & Mercedes, now a Mercedes Benz dealership in Lynbrook, NY

Schubert Brothers, Smithtown, NY, Studebaker dealer, still in the same family as an autobody repair business. In the front office of the business, there are many photos of the place when it was a Studebaker dealer.

That address is in the former Studebaker Aviation Plant on West Chippewa Ave. in South Bend!

                      759 W. Chippewa Ave.

Of course Geoff Newman owned "Standard Surplus Div. of Newman & Altman" and IIRC us St. Joseph County Indiana tax payers then gave him $24,000,000. for what was left of the Studebaker parts inventory in 1999 and another $2,000,000. for the building so it could be demolished. Who knows, maybe Geoff & Ed have a business arrangement of sorts at that very same address. As was mentioned on the Forum a week or so back, Geoff Newman still gets a cut of the proceeds from "Production Order" copies sold by the SNM and maybe Geoff gets a cut of parts sold by Studebaker International
