  • Electrical: Avanti radio static

Just had the 79 Avanti tuned up and now have static on the radio. I know the shielding is ment to prevent that, so I'm guessing the sheiling may have not been re-installed properly. Could the spark plug wire be incorrect? Any other thoughts....

The car requires resistor spark plugs and plug wires and maybe non-resistor was installed.

Also...is the static constant with the engine running or does it go up and down with rpm's? If it's constant, it's ignition caused. If it goes up and down with the rpm's, it's alternator whine. Maybe a filter or condenser on the alternator went bad or got knocked off somehow when work was being done. There could also be a noise filter/condenser on the distributor that's bad or disconnected.

Some later Avanti's had a plastic (fiberglass?) foil lined cover over the distributor. It has a 1/4x20 stud on the bottom, and a wingnut connecting a ground wire. Perhaps the ground wire is off.

That plastic, foil lined distributor cover is what later C3 series Corvettes had. The foil liner could be deteriorated or the ground wire disconnected...just as Bezhawk said. If you need a new one, they're available through Corvette restoration suppliers. They work well, but don't look nearly as nice as the polished steel covers used earlier. It's simply one of GM's ways of doing the same job cheaper...very typical of the smog era.

If the static appeared just after a tuneup. then look to something that was disturbed during the tuneup. Maybe one of the spark plug wires isn't fully seated at one end.
