  • Supercharger vs brake booster

Maybe it's late and I'm not thinking this through, but where do you get your vacuum on a supercharged engine to run the power brake booster.
    Thanks,
    Jim

Off the intake manifold, same as usual. The engine still develops vacuum at most throttle positions. Since you usually let up on the gas a few seconds before applying the brakes, the booster has a chance to "charge." And the booster has a vacuum reservoir with a check valve, so you'll have some vacuum there at almost any time. Short of repeatedly applying the brake while driving at wide-open throttle, it'd be pretty hard to deplete the vacuum in the booster.

Now you DO want be sure the check valve is good. Shut the engine down, and see how many brake applications are needed to deplete the vacuum.

Usually its from using "too big" of a cam that kills your vacuum. The
supercharger should be fine, unless you add it to a wild cam too. But
thats just going to make an awful street car.

Thanks, guys. I should have remembered the vacuum reservoir. Sometimes you just get thinking about something and can't see the forest for the trees.

Yes! My son had a '79 Corvette in which he really built up the engine including a wild cam. He has so little vacuum that he couldn't contol his heater/ac valves or his headlight doors (had to install a vacuum pump to solve the problem).
