View Full Version : No Death Star ?

Although the petition got enough signers to warrant a official response, the White House turned it down.

"

This Isn’t the Petition Response You’re Looking For
The Administration shares your desire for job creation and a strong national defense, but a Death Star isn’t on the horizon. Here are a few reasons:

The construction of the Death Star has been estimated to cost more than $850,000,000,000,000,000. We’re working hard to reduce the deficit, not expand it.
The Administration does not support blowing up planets.
Why would we spend countless taxpayer dollars on a Death Star with a fundamental flaw that can be exploited by a one-man starship?

[…]
If you do pursue a career in a science, technology, engineering or math-related field, the Force will be with us! Remember, the Death Star’s power to destroy a planet, or even a whole star system, is insignificant next to the power of the Force."

Ya gotta give some credit to someone in the White House for having a sense of humor in their reply.

Does anyone remember Pres. Reagan's proposed Star Wars Missile Defense System in space? Ostensibly to negate an attack from outer space or to take out a large meteor or comet!!!

You're surely joking, George.
It was to defeat the Soviets, and since they couldn't pony up enough cash to equal it - we won.

Abosolutely! Correct, we never intended to build anything. We won the cold war by having a stronger economy. (then shipped all manufacturing jobs overseas)???? go figure

Zackley! Back in the day when Khrushchev said "We will bury you!" He was talking that they would bury the West economically. How's that workin' out for ya, Ivan?

As the others have said..to destroy incoming ICBM warheads.
It was laughed at by non-defense types at the time...
But with various countries (and especially non-nation state groups to which our normal deterrence of retaliation isn't a worry) developing missiles and nukes, it could still come in handy.

You guys don't understand Washington.

We have one already. It is on the other side of the sun so you can't see it. Obama will announce it at in his inauguration speech next week.

Worked out well, except they didn't last long enough. Saint Reagan began the deficit spiral that put us so deep in the hole we'll never get out.

Bin Laden almost completed the process that Ivan began, according to this article from The Daily Beast ( http://www.thedailybeast.com/cheats/2011/05/03/bin-ladenrsquos-goal-bankrupt-the-us.html ):

Al Qaeda's Goal: Bankrupt the U.S.
How successful was bin Laden, anyway? Ezra Klein takes up the question in a column today, and finds that while the al Qaeda leader didn't win his battle with the U.S., he sure came close. According to al Qaeda expert Daveed Gartenstein-Ross, bin Laden's goal all along was to bankrupt the United States, just as he bankrupted the Soviet Union by waging a resistance war in Afghanistan. The Afghan campaign taught bin Laden that “superpowers fall because their economies crumble, not because they’re beaten on the battlefield,” writes Klein. “For another, superpowers are so allergic to losing that they’ll bankrupt themselves trying to conquer a mass of rocks and sand.” That's the strategy he set out to use against the United States, and it almost worked. Nobel laureate Joseph Stiglitz estimates the price of the Iraq War alone at over $3 trillion. Afghanistan will likely add another trillion or two. Then there's another trillion for the homeland security spending. “It’s a smart play against a superpower,” writes Klein. “We didn’t need to respond to 9/11 by trying to reshape the entire Middle East, but we’re a superpower, and we think on that scale.” Bin Laden “may not have won,” writes Klein, “but he did succeed, at least partially.”

Bin Laden is dead, and our economy may never dig out of the hole he helped dig for us. My, aren't we clever?

Countdown to the non-right wing response being nuked in...

You know, Pat, you posted an interesting link. So why do you have to be a jerk about it, too?

Really, I get tired of trying to be civil while wiping up after others' incivility.

That, and they (Afghanistan) also helped bankrupt USSR. We supplied the weapons to the Taliban to fight the Soviet army. The same Taliban that we are fighting now.
It seems we reneged on some infrastructure promises after the Soviets left their country.
