Dictator, I can see that, but you have to look at the time the name was used. When Studebaker was building Dictators (which was before 1939 with the introduction of the Champion) the Dictator name was used because it was supposed to "Dictate" the low priced field. The name was dropped in 1939 because of WWII; Studebaker didn't want the general public to associate the name with Adolf so the next years model was called the Champion.

Probably written by a 20 something. Nova made the list?
Their quote: "The English word "nova" suggests an exploding star — and car manufacturers really shouldn't sell cars based on that suggestion."
Exploding star would be great in Hollywood!

Also in Spanish, "No va" means "No go"

Exactly! Before the name Jaguar they were known as SS (Swallow Sidecar) during the 1930's. Also tells you where they got their start.

How about Utopian Turtletop. This was a proposed name for which car?

For that matter: 'Matador' had bad connotations for some Spanish speakers as well. Oh well since 40 years ago few people spoke that language here.

'La Crosse' is a crude slang expression for the Quebecois so that model Buick was the 'Allure'.

Wow. It was to the point after WWII that the 'Thule' twin lightning bolts was illegal for use in Germany yet the rock group KISS (with two of its members being Jewish) did use those Thules as part of their logo. Note that even they were banned from use of it in Germany when touring and/or on their album art.

I had a Rambler/AMC Matador once & our tug was called that when we bought it & it means "the one who kills"... as in giving the final killing stroke, not being a total murderer, but still...

& if you spell Nova "Nuova" instead it means new in Italian, if I'm not mistaken, like the Fiat 500 Nuova... googe that sweet little car!
