  • Rear Axle: To toss or not to toss ?

    I am readying my 62' wagon for it's 63' Cruiser drivetrain swap. The car has a 4.65 TT behind a 6 OHV. This car sat for years...last tagged in 96'. I haven't checked the axle fluid level yet, but shouldn't both wheels rotate smoothly together when turned ? The opposite wheel skips around in the same direction ...just barely. The head was cracked in several places and the OD tranny had only a few cups of fluid. I will be junking most of this car soon

    That is the way a TT is supposed to turn, except for the skipping part but that could be caused by clutch plates that have stuck together after years of non use.

      First of all, is the subject rear axle in the '63 Cruiser or the Wagon? Either way it should be a Model 44 H.D. Dana.
      The Ratio would certainly NOT be 4.65 to 1 though. I do not think Dana even made that ratio for ANY make, certainly not Studebaker.
      If it was 6 Cyl. most were 3.73, it could be a 4.09 or other special order or replacement ratios, up to 4.27, 4.54.
      Also South Bend '63 Cruisers only came with 289 V-8's and Model 44's certainly not junk.

        Hey Rich....you got me on the number....On the 62' wagon (P6) are these tags/markings: 4.56 45B 27 (on case). Recall a 6 OHV engine. My 63' Cruiser is an "open" 3.31 w/ a strong 289 and T86/OD. I was tempted to keep the little TT out back knowing I drive my Studes easier then some and never have left a 27 R/A on the road (so to speak)...but between the ratio, unknown condition of the R/A, and some minor issues (e.g. shaft length, u-joints, etc), I decided to use whats working in the Cruiser. So to my concern, to get the junk donor 63' Cruiser rolling for the junkie....I can place behind it one of 3 model 27's that I have: the 4.56TT, a similar 3.07TT or a low mileage 3.73(open). What would you do ?...BTW, I'm loading up the Cruiser with trannys, R/A's, a 259 and other Stude junk for some Chinese metal-money....

          Wow that really is a toss up, a 4.56 TT Model 27 is a good racer (NOT in a 27) or to use with Overdrive in a 259 or 6 Cyl. But I think I would choose to scrap the 3.73 since it is the most common in 27's and being an open.

          Put the rest that you do not need on the Stude. swap page.

              I'm junking a non-running 259 and AT out of a 1960 HT. That's where the 3.07 TT came from...I will likely toss the T96, but remove the OD solenoid and governor (hoping both are good). I've got a bunch of heavy stuff to toss into the hulk too...

                What is scrap prices back east? one cent a pound? been there done that , and a nice feeling when you make some room and pocket a little cash but very little.

                  I think I'd figure a way to get it to the yard without a rear axle before scrapping any TT. Surely someone would buy it.
