Any advise for adding a AC to my 1962 289 GT Hawk. . I see vintage ac ads. .and another ad from a vendor in Texas. . .what about pulling an under dash unit. . .and the headaches and successes. . .don't want to drive to South Bend from Arab, AL with 100 degree heat again. . .so your insights will be appreciated. . .

I put a generic, underdash unit in my 66 Daytona before going to South Bend. Hot, humid days there were very nice inside the car. Even ran the A/C while cruising around the Proving Ground track. Living in Phoenix, an A/C unit is not an option. I found the unit on ebay and it works very well. Installation was fairly simple, having to make a couple brackets to mount the alternator because I used the alternator mount for the compressor. If you can find an original A/C mount, the installation will be easier because they make an adapter to mount the rotary compressor onto the original mount.

As your GT is already a "modified" car, do what fits your budget and needs the best. Your car is "out and about", get the comfort level that allows you to drive it. WE had a GREAT time with you and your wife in South Bend. Merry Christmas!

On my 62 GT, last spring I installed a Vintage Air compressor mount & pulley kit sourced by Summit. It is second to none when it comes to fit and function. The VA kits are available for V8 Studes with & without power steering; either kit keeps the load off the water pump, by bypassing it and using a motor mounted idler pulley. For the rest of the kit, whatever you prefer. But you should be able to stay around $1000 for everything if you shop wisely and do your own work.

Ray Lin Restoration of Winston Salem N C has a site with how to install an A/C set up, it is a slick way to do it.....I have it on my 62 Champ and it was very easy to make up the Alternator bracket for it.....Roughly 1000.00 for the set up.....Maybe even less if you shop wisely.....Keep on Studebakering

If you are planning on being at the South Bend meet in May, I'll make plans to be there. Generally I am hunting Wild Turkey (the bird) at that time. But always open to a visit with friends!

The Vintage Air setup is the way to go. It is well engineered and fits perfectly under the hood on a Stude V8. Unless you have time to fiddle with all the pulleys and belt locations just spend the money and get it over with. I did and it was well worth it.

Hi Ernie, I owned a 62 GT Hawk years ago with dealer installed AC. Worked great, never any problems, no noticeable performance issues. I'm quite sure the units available now are far superior in performance.
