Have been searching for the VIN number on a 1951 Commander. Anyone know where to look so that I can finally register my car?

Someone else can chime in for sure on a 51, but on my 50 the engine block VIN was on the front driver side etched into the block. I was told if I could not locate that, they could take the VIN located on the metal tag inside the driver door jamb.sigpic

The Serial number tag on the drivers door post is the preferred VIN in almost all states. That tag may have been changed but, it is more common to have had an engine swap.
Should look like this.

Basically what Brad said, the VIN tag should be on the front post next to the drivers side door. That should be enough to register the car. IF they need the body number (and I don't know if or why they would) there is a tag on the passenger side of the firewall. The top numbers are the body code and the bottom would be the body number.Chris Dresbach

My 53, which was originally a San Diego car, was titled using the engine serial # as the VIN. I had my DMV here change it to the door serial when I titled it here last year. I was told by my DMV that this was common practice for California at the time. Hope this helps.
