My studebaker was 6 volt negative ground when i bought it. The previous owner had installed some kind of power door opneners on it
using a 12 volt battery in the trunk for power. (since removed) I
changed it back to pos. ground, and reversed the battery cables,
and re-polarized the generator, but I must havew fried the old
regulator, for when it is running the ammeter bounces off the dis-
charge peg. I can buy a one wire 6v pos ground aternator
for around $100.00 dollars. what is your take on this? One supplier
wants 103.00 just for a 1955 prez. regulator. Any tips on replacing
the oil pan gaskets? Thanks.

When the battery polarity is changed either way, the wires on the ammeter must also be swapped.
So it's quite possible your generator is charging, but the ammeter is reading backwards.

When I pull on the headlights without the engine running the
ammeter shows discharge. The previous owner didn't bother to
change the wires on the ammeter when he changed the polarity.
I think I'll just go with a positive ground 1 wire alternator.
A local Model A ford parts store will sell me one for $89.00.

Be careful which alternator you choose. The higher amperage units can overwhelm your ammeter.
