  • Steering: 62 Hawk - removed steering wheel - reattach

Well I was not a careful person when I removed the steering wheel on the Hawk - I replaced the old tach sending unit with a new one and that required some rewiring - bottom line is the shaft is now down in the jacket lower than it should be - 1" - 1-1/2" - can not get the steering wheel back on.
Any hints on how to correct the problem.
    Thanks

The most likely thing is that the jacket moved up, closer to the driver. The center shaft is part of the steering box and it does not move.

But why would you need to go into the steering jacket for a tachometer rework in the first place? I am puzzled.

      RadioRoy:
Fat fingers and the new sender unit set up relocated the resister wire to the starter switch. Hope to get back on this issue on Friday. According to the shop manual the jacket is held down by a bracket - did not see this bracket on the interior so I guess it is in the engine compartment.
