To: COMMANDERPINK1,------They both have pull handles....but it doesn't matter if Your right or wrong....the important thing is that You gave it a shot!...so....WELL DONE!!

I'm not sure when, but the latch/lock mechanism was changed from the Mercedes tapered cone to the post and bear claw latch type. This moved the lock cylinder from in the handle, to below the handle.

To: bezhawk,----Yes, that's all true.....but that change happened pre '83. (Both the '83 and the '85 Avantis have the 'bear claw' type latch, with lock cyl. removed from ext. handle)

85 has painted handles?

To: mbstude,-----Good try, but no.....both are chrome plated. (I believe that there was a 'blackout' pkg. both of those years....but consider these handles in question to be both chrome plated)

ANSWER: By '85, Avanti introduced exterior door handles that were not drilled for the original Studebaker Avanti lock setup. (For many years Avanti Motors plugged that hole with a chrome button.) Eliminating
the hole completely, as was done on the '85 Avanti door handles, made for a nicer, more 'finished' look.
