  • Speedo / Tach / Gauges: How to read 1957 President Temp Gauge?

Long-time lurker, first-time poster here. I'm the proud owner a 1957 President Classic which I've recently gotten back into running condition. All the gauges work, but I'm afraid I don't know how to read the Temp gauge! It's the type with a rotating shaft that's painted red and green with a small white line between the colors. There are two small tic marks on the gauge face. Intuitively, I would want the white line between the tic marks. Is that how these things work?

    Thanks- Blake

    First- WELCOME to the Fourm!!!

You've sorta got it right when it comes to these gauges. They are actually just like any normal gauge with the exception of the needle having a 'flag' attached. Red on the temp, green on the fuel. And you are right- when the temp is roughly in the middle- things are fine. If you start seeing more red then green- things are not so good.

'least that's how my Commander works.

Welcome and a nice car. My first Studebaker was a 1957 President Classic that had been used for one year.

        Thanks guys!

I took the first drive last Sunday and everything worked great, but I thought the temp climbed a little too quickly for as nice a day as it was. Now that I know what to expect from that gauge, I'm better equipped to do some troubleshooting.
