  • Fuel System: Fuel pump replacement 66' 283

I am in need of a fuel pump for my 1966 Daytona with the 283 engine. I've been doing some research, and it looks as though I will be looking for an ethanol resistant pump? What do people do, have theirs rebuilt with new rubber parts inside or purchase a new one off eBay "airtek?" I'm a little hesitant to purchase one without putting this out there to my Studebaker friends. Anyone with experience with this would be very helpfull. Thanks!

Go to any auto parts store and ask for one. They are the same as the Chevys and readily available. It will probably be cheaper than on Ebay. Ask the sales staff about compatibility with ethanol.

You need an AC or Carter, or Holley pump that has the outlets "clockable" this lets you rotate the inlets and outlets to clear the frame. A cheap Airtex or other stamped crimped pump will most likely hit the frame.

Summit Racing has their own brand fuel pump that's clockable for much less than the Holley.

Somewhere on this Forum there is a thread or two about this.
I think the last one was about 12-18 months ago, maybe?
I recall lots of ideas being tossed around, but one is a sure bet...

get a pump that looks like this~

The rest of my pics can be found here~

Yup it's NOS, and it has been on my driver for well over five years.
Perfect fit, no leaks, and NO FRAME BUMPING!!!

As Dave said the clearance on 65 & 66 V-8 fuel pumps is critical. I would do a search on them. If memory serves me I seem to think that a pump from a Chevy S-10 fits best due to a smaller diameter, but dont go to the bank with that. Mine had an "AC" pump on it originally when I got my Cruiser but it too hit the frame. It wasn't the type that could be clocked so I got the correct one from a Studebaker vendor.

I did research on this thru the forum a few months ago, purchased an airtex 40254 to keep as a spare, it looks right , but I have not verified the fit.

It really will depend on your motor mounts too. I am running solid mounts in Pinkie and I have plenty of clearance.
