  • Cool/Heat: Water pump rebuild, 1957 Golden Hawk

    Hello together,

Today I took out the leaking water pump of my 1957 Studebaker Golden Hawk.

Now I have a few questions, as I want to rebuild it myself.

There is a wire inside the water pump as you can see on the pictures, can I just take it out and what is its function?

I assume it is the original water pump, casting 527070. Which important things do I have to observe in the process of rebuilding it? Clearance, impeller, etc. I already have a complete repair kit for this pump.

Thank you for any advice and help. Have a nice day.

The wire is a locking device. It holds the bearing in position with a corresponding groove in the housing. Many (most) rebuilds have the shaft, and bearing as an assembly.

Check Bob Johnstones "Studebaker Tech" site.
There are several discussions and tech info on water pumps.
You can either Google it or go to the SDC home page.
Go to the left hand side "Tech Tips, Specs and Data"
Go to "Studebaker Technical Tips and Information"

          Hello again,

Thank you very much for your advice. The first water pump broke into pieces. Luckily I had another one laying around (which also had the correct green color). This one I rebuilt but afterwards it was leaking, finally managed to solve the problem, now it works.
For another time, just as a question, who would you recommend to get a rebuilt (original) water pump 527070 from?
