  • Other: '63 R2 Hawk oil capacity?

I know this has been discussed before and I have gone back and read the "dipstick" threads and the shop manual, but I just want to make sure before I circumcise my dipstick tube. Whenever I change oil & filter, the stick always reads 1 qt low ("5 qts" stamped on it.) I always added the extra quart which seemed to quickly disappear and I would just drive it showing a qt low. After reading the threads related to that topic here, I suspect I have the wrong dipstick tube length but I hate to hack the tube off until I'm absolutely sure that's the right thing to do. Any last word input on this subject? Seems like a really glaring oversight on Studebaker's part, but I haven't received any recall notices on this issue....

The owners manual is not clear at all. An R1 or R2 engine holds six quarts with a filter but the sump itself is a five quart capacity. I guess Studebaker never corrected or made clear their manuals after oil filters became common and standard.

Thanks, Slinger. That's what I thought, now all I have to do is figure out where that first qt of oil goes......

Are you saying that you actually had the correct amount of Oil in it (6 Qts.) and after running it 2 to 5 Min., the dipstick reads "Full"?

But then HOW soon does it disappear? 500 miles, 1000 miles what? Or a week, 2 weeks (leaking)?
