  • Brakes: Pumping brakes

I have a dual master cylinder on my car. For some reason I have had to pump my brakes to get
brake pressure and the pedal pressure up. I have checked all lines and there are no leaks and
the fluid level is up at the top. I spoke to a mechanic and he thought it was a wear problem, than
the master. A friend of mine also into cars disagrees. Could it be wear on the adjusting leavers.
It is a 1952 Studebaker. Thank you.

It's got air in the lines; needs a good bleeding.

Also check the free play between the linkage and the M/C. Adjust until there is NO free play, then back it off about 1 to 1.5 turns. That is AFTER you bleed them and get all the air out.

If the master cylinder is old if could well be that the seals inside are shot and the master cylinder needs to be replaced or rebuilt. I have seen this when I was turning wrenches with women drivers.......woman came in and the car needed brakes so I did front and rears. She came back in complaining about having to pump the brakes so I take it for a drive......I found no problem so I had her drive it with me and sure nough she had to pump the brakes......bottom line is that I applied the brakes faster the she did so with me the rubber cups flared into place and sealed....so if the brakes need to be pumped you either have air of the fluid is bypassing someplace.
If you car is ugly then it better be fast.....
